KIPP Delta Students Explore the Mississippi

The Quapaw Canoe Company has been running an after school club for KIPP Delta students for the past couple years, but this month they’ve taken the partnership even further. Currently two of KIPP Delta Collegiate High’s students are taking part in a 10-day expedition on the Mississippi River with John Ruskey, of Quapaw Canoe Company, and Mike Clark, of Big Muddy Adventures. The crew is completing the first ever documented circumnavigation of Big Island, a piece of land carved out by the Mississippi, Arkansas, and White Rivers. KIPP Delta students Oscar Donaby, Class of 2013, and Tristan Honeycutt, Class of 2014, are working their muscles as well as their minds, collecting data for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and participating in the annual bird count for the National Audubon Society.  In addition to having Oscar and Tristan onboard, Ms. Sara Guilliam’s Environmental Science class also participated in a research opportunity by meeting with the crew on Saturday, February 23 at the Arkansas Post National Memorial.
