KIPP Blytheville Step Team Shines

The first-ever KIPP Blytheville College Preparatory School (BCPS) step team has had a successful year so far. Ms. Jo Cabey, a fourth grade math and science teacher at KIPP, founded the step team in the fall of 2013 after a small group of students expressed interests. After several days of tryouts, fourteen girls in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade were chosen to be part of the first team. The team, which decided to name themselves “Young Generation,” includes the following students: Kurstian Gales, Jadakuess Hughes, Mizan Niles, Kelsey Reeves, Makiya Richardson, Yasmine Robinson, Ta’Nayia Shields, Azia Stone, Diamond Stone, Destinee Terry, Diamond Watson, Jamilla Wilson, Natalie White, and Teuna Young.
Their first year has been a busy one with Young Generation performing at many events, both inside and outside of school. The step team headlined several events that were hosted by KIPP Blytheville including the BCPS Thanksgiving Lunch, the BCPS Winter Concert, a BLI visit to campus, and the SOUPer Bowl fundraising event. Young Generation has also been invited to several community events outside of school, including the Daddy’s Diamonds banquet, the Legend’s Weekend step show, and the RIP the Runway Fashion Show sponsored by Firm Foundation Ministries. At each performance, the students have been able to show their KIPP pride and do something they love.
Due to budget restraints, the Young Generations step team has not been able to purchase uniforms to wear at their performances. Ms. Cabey and her team have made an online fundraising page in hopes of purchasing uniforms for the upcoming school year. If you would like to donate, please visit
