Notes from the Delta - December 2013 Newsletter

From the Executive Director

Dear Friends, Family, & Supporters,

As we continue our twelfth year serving students in the Arkansas Delta, KIPP Delta is working hard to achieve its year-end goals. This month, I want to take a few moments to report some of our most recent accomplishments as well as some requests we have of you all to ensure our success continues.

First, I am excited to announce that the 2012-2013 KIPP Delta Annual Report is now live on our website.  You can view the report by going here. We are proud of all of our accomplishments this year and we feel this publication captures not only the numbers associated with these accomplishments, but also the stories of students, teachers, and administrators who made them possible. While we have posted the Annual Report on the website to reduce our environmental impact, please reach out to Carissa Godwin at if you would like a hard copy.

We have also had some exciting developments on the college partnership front recently. Shamonica Brown, Class of 2013, appeared on television with the president of Ouachita Baptist University to share how KIPP and the OBU partnership have benefited her. If you would like to see the clip, you can find it here. We have worked with OBU since 2010 and are excited that they became an official KIPP college partner last year.  In becoming a KIPP partner, OBU committed to fully funding two students, providing a high level liaison to handle issues that might prevent our students from graduating, as well as opportunities for feedback so that we can learn how to better prepare our students for college. Earlier in the year, we also finalized a partnership with the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff that fully finances five KIPPsters every year, supports a peer mentoring program between upper and lower classmen, and helps identify additional scholarships.  Lastly, KIPP Delta and the University of Arkansas have been working hard on a similar agreement and hope to have it finalized by the end of the school year. We know our KIPPsters need continued support to get to graduation day, and we are excited to continue partnering with institutions that also believe a student’s zip code should not dictate whether he or she will go to or complete college.

As we look towards the future, two questions stick out to me as fundamental to our continued success:

  • Are we building a sustainable financial model?
  • Are we building a sustainable people model?

With this in mind, we ask that you continue to spread the message about our Capital Campaign and our ongoing recruitment efforts to bring high-quality instructors and leaders to our schools. We are now only a little over $130,000 away from the amount we need to break ground on the kindergarten wing expansion and elementary school play ground. Furthermore, we continue to seek teachers, Assistant Principals, and School Directors for our schools in Helena, our school in Blytheville, and our soon-to-open high school in Blytheville. For more information or questions on our fundraising efforts please contact Carissa Godwin at For more information or questions regarding recruitment and talent, please contact Jamie VanDeWalle at

Have a very Happy New Year and we will see you in 2014!

  1. Two bonus levels:
    • Silver Champion: $100 Visa Gift Cards for referrals that advance to the selection process
    • Gold Champion: $1,000 bonus for referrals who are hired as Fisher or Miles Family Fellows ($500 upon hire and $500 once the Fellow completes six months of employment).
  2. Referral campaign will run until January 17, 2014. (Deadline for application is February 7, 2014)
  3. The person you are referring must not currently be employed with KIPP to be eligible for a gift card or bonus. If multiple people refer the same person, only the first will be awarded a bonus.

Submit your referrals through the online form TODAY and help build our network. If you can’t think of anyone to refer, please spread the word through Facebook, Twitter, or email and encourage others to participate.
